This section serves as a primer — a reflection on American civics and the enduring framework of the Constitution, which established a government of laws, shared power, and collective responsibility. My hope the articles inspires reflection, dialogue, and renewed commitment — to learn, to question, and to participate. The more we understand our democratic foundations, the stronger our ability to protect and advance them. In studying where our principles began, we find the power to ensure that the nation’s founding aspirations continue to guide its future.

Dedicated to the Government Workforce

I started this project to spotlight the federal workforce — the people whose quiet, steady service keeps the nation running. During furlough, I’ve had time to reflect on the countless dedicated colleagues I’ve met throughout my career. Furthermore, as a recent Fellow in the White House Leadership Development Program I have added to my cache of encounters with inspiring federal leaders. Federal work, though often unseen, touches every part of American life. But let us not forget the millions of state, local, tribal, territorial employees, and contractors who partner with the federal workforce — who share the same mission of public service.

The vignettes presented here are more comprehensive stories, not the snippets provided in Public Service: A Love Story. My wish is for the reader to come away more enlightened or excited about the work that public servants perform.
